You could say that the Ecuadorian Amazon is a well-protected forest. However, there remains a need for reforestation after years of not treating our planet properly. That is why Nightwatch works with multiple organisations to stimulate the reforestation of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Not only by initiating plant tissue culture projects, but also by cooperating and donating to NGOs who are planting trees in Ecuador.

One of the NGOs we work with is up2green. Their specialty is to connect different communities, companies, foundations and even individuals who are involved in the preservation of different ecosystems. They organise ecosystem restoration projects, community agroforestry and the development of local agricultural sectors. Nightwatch finds it important to contribute to such projects in the service of biodiversity.

There are only benefits when it comes to using recycled paper. The mountain of waste reduces thus so does the use of water and energy that is needed to produce new materials. Wherever possible, we try to reuse materials. It is important to be aware of the impact you can have by doing so. Therefore we try and set an example by promoting only in a sustainable way.

Nightwatch has initiated a plant tissue culture project in cooperation with R&S Tissue Cultures. This is a Dutch organisation that focuses on creating virus and pathogen-free baby plants under sterile conditions. They research the mother lines of our Ecuadorian Ilex Guayusa plants and reciprocate a stronger version that is virus and pathogen free. Tissue culture labs in Ecuador will multiply these healthy stocks in order to supply healthy young plant material to the Quichua tribes that farm our Guayusa plants. 

By supplying Quichua communities with clean and healthy starting materials for growing guayusa, harvests will increase and so production levels will rise without encroaching on the forest. This last bit is quite important to us as communities often burn down an area to reuse the ground. We naturally don’t want that to happen because of the environmental impact it would have, but also because it would set back the production of the Quichua communities. By enabling them to work with healthy and virus free plants they can profit more from the harvests without encroaching on the forest.

Nightwatch has recently added aluminum cans to the assortment. Aluminum is an absolute champion in recycling with 95% of cans being reused. Because of the magnetic quality it is easy to find cans in mixed garbage so they won’t go to waste very easily. This makes the environmental footprint even smaller compared to glass packaging which is something Nightwatch values highly.

The Green Matters Foundation is a foundation that lies very close to the heart of Nightwatch. The foundation aims to promote the preservation of cultures, nature, but above all, the environment around the world. They aim to help and develop small communities at a micro level so that the ancient knowledge that the communities possess don’t go to waste. They for instance pay attention to the preservation of medicinal plants, language and traditions.
